With the ongoing COVID crisis, it is easy for parents and families to focus their concern on staying inside and making sure that the needs of their families are met. This physical distancing, while important, also has the potential to make people feel isolated.

Research suggests that the best technique to combat such feelings of isolation is to foster a concern for people around us.

As a parent, you play an important role in developing the ability of your child to care for others. It is important to push young children to think about the impact the crisis is having on senior citizens and economically and socially disadvantaged populations. Your child’s attention and thought may not go automatically to them.

There are some steps you can take to expand the child’s circle of compassion:

1. Helping children empathise: As a parent you can pay attention to what your child says. You can also ask him to to think about the impact this crisis may have on migrant workers, or senior citizens. What are some of the problems they may be facing at a time like this?

2. Take action with your child: If your schedule and finances allow, you can make packets of food and other essentials that can be distributed to those in need. Please remember to take all the precautions to safeguard yourselves.

Your children can accompany you during such activities and talk to the different people you meet. You can ask your child to think about how (s)he can display gratitude to those people who have been at the frontlines in this time of crisis.
