As a leader, the COVID crisis brings new challenges. Schools principals have to create systems that facilitate uninterrupted learning for both teachers and students. Many school leaders have also shared challenges that they have been facing in keeping staff morale up, and adapting the schedules to suit both learners and the faculty. Making informed decisions and providing support to others also becomes more critical in such a crisis.
According to mindfulness educator Metta Mcgarvey, during periods such as these where daily lives are disrupted, anxiety and fear can rise.
During such times, it becomes more crucial to take care of each other. Here are some steps that you can take as a leader:
Practising the intention to show up for others: Leading requires multi-tasking. However, offering undivided attention is especially challenging. However, undivided attention in such a time displays the purest form of generosity. You can practice to do this at multiple times during a day. You can do it once, for some of your colleagues at school, and for your family.
Showing up for yourself: It is important to also create spaces where you can recharge your batteries. If you face situations where you find that you need some time for yourself, do not be afraid to take it. It is also important to know your limits and knowing when you are feeling stressed so that you take a step away. Another important detail involves being fully present in the moment, both while you are working and relaxing.
